Nothing Runs on Empty: Feeding people in need during Hunger Action Month and year-round

As part of our Breakfasts for Better Days™ signature cause platform, Kellogg is fighting hunger and feeding people’s potential around the world. In 2017, we donated 570 million servings of food to food banks, breakfast clubs and disaster relief. Our efforts also reached 586,772 children through feeding programs and nutrition education.

An important partner in this work is the Feeding America network of 200 food banks across the U.S. Feeding America has designated September as Hunger Action Month. To recognize this occasion, we interviewed Stephanie Slingerland, Director, Philanthropy / Social Impact, Kellogg Company, about how we feed people in need by supporting Feeding America, and how others can also support their important work.

Q. Why is Hunger Action Month important?

A. In the U.S., 1 in 8 people struggles with hunger. Hunger exists in every county in the U.S., affecting 40 million people, including nearly 13 million children[1]. During Hunger Action Month, we join Feeding America in providing food donations to our neighbors in need, and by raising awareness of the need and ways to donate. Kellogg has donated food and financial resources to Feeding America since 1983.

Q. What action is Kellogg taking to help fight hunger and draw attention to this important need?

A. Through our food donations and financial support, we’re fully behind Feeding America’s goal to eliminate hunger in the U.S. We undertake similar work in the U.S. and abroad, including:

  • Donating to food banks on six continents.

  • Partnering with our customers’ anti-hunger and food donation campaigns, such as Walmart’s . The campaign, held each spring, donated more than 232 million meals to Feeding America food banks across the U.S. in 2018.

  • Supporting and expanding school breakfast programs in 32 countries, including increasing access to U.S. school breakfast for 300,000 children by implementing new “grab-and-go” and other successful models.

  • Making food donations when needed in the aftermath of natural disasters.

  • Providing important nutrition education to help address the dual global health concerns of malnutrition and obesity.

Q. What can I do to help fight hunger?

A. If you want to help, you can take action by:

  • Volunteering your time to get food in the hands of people who need it most.

  • Donating food and money to your local food bank,

  • Advocating to end hunger by reaching out to your elected officials to support policies that ensure aid to hungry families,

Thank you for helping to feed people in need and for bringing awareness to this important topic!
