Honoring World Food Day with a global food drive

In a world where we produce enough food for everyone, how can the number of hungry people continue to increase? It’s a question we at Kellogg Company ask ourselves often, and it’s the impetus for our Breakfasts for Better Days™ global signature cause platform addressing food security and creating three billion Better Days by the end of 2025.

According to Lisa Moon, The Global FoodBanking Network President and Chief Executive Officer, the answer is two-fold: getting food to people in need, and making sure food pantries receive the foods they need to make the greatest impact. “Many critical food items like proteins, grains and fruits and vegetables are not always the most donated items, yet these foods are needed to create well-balanced meals,” said Moon. “As 1 in 9 people continue to be undernourished globallyi, we recognize that there is an opportunity for food donations to be even more effective.”

To help us understand how we can help fight hunger by donating the foods hungry families need the most, we collaborated with the Global FoodBanking Network on a new survey of hundreds of food banks in 26 countries.  The survey provided comprehensive information on the food items most needed to help nourish the families that food banks serve.

Armed with this information, Kellogg is launching a global food drive to encourage donations to food banks on six continents beginning on World Food Day, October 16 and running through Giving Tuesday, November 27. We’re encouraging people to donate any of these most-needed items to their local food bank, which can be found at https://www.foodbanking.org/what-we-do/our-global-reach/

Top 10 Food Items Needed by Food Banks Globally:

Rice                                               Canned Vegetables

Cooking Oil                                    Canned Protein

Dry Beans                                      Noodles

Shelf Stable Milk                            Canned Fruit

Cereal                                            Juice

To support this effort, Kellogg has set a goal to donate 1.5 million servings of food to food banks through employee-led meal packing events and food drives across the globe.

Initiatives like these make me especially proud to work at Kellogg. They demonstrate that we are a company with a heart and soul, committed to doing our part to help fight hunger and feed people in need. Through this work, we can help ensure that not only more food, but the most-needed foods, make their way into people’s homes.

During World Food Day 2017, Kellogg donated more than 1.1 million servings of food, and 539 employees volunteered 1,388 hours at events supporting 38 food banks in 22 countries. Overall in 2017, Kellogg donated 570 million servings of food and created more than 637 million Better Days around the globe.

With your help, we look forward to making an even bigger contribution to addressing the challenge of world hunger in 2018.
