Employee Safety

The mission of Employee Health and Safety (EHS) at Kellogg is to nurture a culture that believes zero injuries are possible, while minimizing our impact on the planet and communities where we live, work and source.

We have a comprehensive occupational health and safety management system that ensures compliance with 66 global standards that we deem essential in the workplace. These standards are applicable to all workers, workplaces and activities. We also have a global employee health and safety statement signed by our Chief Executive Officer, Steve Cahillane.

Creating a strong safety culture within every individual at Kellogg is one of our K Values™.  All Plant Leadership Team members actively coach teams in EHS principles. Everyone is engaged and accountable to eliminate losses; employees establish and execute standard work to restore and maintain conditions; and we do not tolerate unsafe behavior, conditions or actions that harm people or the environment.

We learn, listen and remain curious to further strengthen our EHS Center of Excellence. We also strive to achieve 100% employee engagement in our safety initiatives through building our team members’ capabilities. We leverage a skills matrix to capture the necessary skills and level of competency required for roles, and meet or exceed all regulatory training requirements.

Our Journey to ‘Zero’

In 2020, we updated our environment health and safety EHS standards and programs to ensure consistency from plant to plant. These include:

  • More focus on leading indicators like near misses
  • Annual health checks to ensure compliance of EHS standards
  • Sharing of lessons learned around Severe Injury Fatality (SIF) incidents – near miss and first aid
  • Better understanding of employee perceptions around safety

We continue to make progress addressing safety across our organization. In 2020, we had no fatalities and our global Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) dropped to .37, which is below the industry average. Our global Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) also dropped to 0.20, which is well below the industry average. Both rates are the lowest in our company’s history.

We’re also increasing our emphasis on the leading indicators that drive these results. By identifying potential concerns in real time across our operations, we can address them immediately and prevent future incidents. One of these areas of focus is further reducing hand and finger injuries across our manufacturing facilities. Globally, hand injuries have not increased since 2018. We continue to strive for hand injury reduction by improving safety by design and through launching a new training campaign in 2021.

Another area of focus is ensuring the automotive safety of our sales team. The telematics system in our fleet provides important information we use to coach driving behaviors. With this information, as well as regular training, our Kellogg U.S. sales teams’ collision rate was 25 percent less than the closest benchmarked company in 2020.

In early 2020, our Pringles facility in Jackson, Tenn., received a Governor’s Award of Excellence for Workplace Safety and Health. In 2019 & 2020, we were a finalist for the National Safety Council Campbell Award. 


Safety Amid the Pandemic

While ensuring the safety of our people is our top priority, we’ve gone above and beyond to ensure our employees remain safe while meeting consumer demand throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Our employees working on the frontlines of our business have done so safely and courageously to ensure Kellogg can continue feeding people during the pandemic," said Cahillane.

We’ve helped our people who can work from home do so through technology enhancements and flexible scheduling. For employees who work on the front lines in stores or in our production facilities, we’ve significantly enhanced our already robust sanitation protocols and implemented strict social distancing and wellness checks.
