Company’s culture of volunteerism encourages employees to bring our heart and soul to life
Giving back to others is a long-held belief at Kellogg Company. We’re proud to be part of communities around the world and even more proud of all our employees do to help the people in these communities thrive.
To say that Kellogg has established a volunteer culture in an understatement. In 2019, our employees volunteered more than 17,000 hours to support people around the world. Their generosity is helping us achieve our ambitious Kellogg’s® Better Days commitment to create Better Days for 3 billion people by the end of 2030.
To encourage this level of engagement, some of our regions give employees time away from work each year to volunteer. It’s also not unusual for Kellogg teams to volunteer together. Following are just a few ways our employees gave back in 2019.
The Kellogg Australia team volunteered with Our Big Kitchen to make meals of Dhal and cookies for the homeless and volunteer firefighters.
In Russia, 173 Kellogg employees packed more than 2 tons of food for those in need.
- The Pringles® and cereal teams in Manchester, U.K. volunteered with The Bread and Butter Thing, packing food to share with people across the community.
Our senior leaders also demonstrate our company’s commitment to volunteering by doing so regularly. Through our Volunteer With Me program, leaders encourage employees to spend time volunteering with them in our communities. Doing so gives people the opportunity to work side-by-side with senior executives they might not otherwise have an opportunity to know, while together making a difference in our neighbors’ lives.
For example, our CEO Steve Cahillane and a group of 10 employees from across the company volunteered with the South Michigan Food Bank’s Fresh Food initiative. The program provides free fresh produce, dairy products, baked goods and meat to community members at pickup locations across the region. And Rishi Padhi, E-commerce Vice President and General Manager and his team also donated their time distributing Fresh Food in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Members of our business employee resource groups (B/ERG) also support our communities through volunteerism. During an ¡HOLA! speed volunteering event, B/ERG members prepared 1,000 after-school food packs for students at local schools. Members of our Women of Kellogg (WOK) B/ERG also regularly volunteer. According to Stacy Flathau, National Co-Chair, Women of Kellogg, “Seeing the results of our efforts motivates us to do more. We’ve seen children and families in need around the world enjoy our wholesome foods through our volunteer work with school breakfast programs, food banks and pantries, and disaster relief sites.”
Showing new employees the way
Kellogg Malaysia helps new employees quickly embrace our culture of volunteering. As part of its onboarding program, those new to the company spend time volunteering with a Kellogg breakfast club that provides a nutritious meal to children so they can start their school day ready to learn.
Volunteering on our annual day of service
Each year, our employees provide annual volunteer service in honor World Food Day in October by hosting food drives and meal-packing events. In 2019, more than 1,000 Kellogg employees volunteered more than 3,300 hours – a 27% increase over 2018 – at events like these in 20-plus countries, including Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Ireland, Singapore, South Africa, the U.S. and many other communities.
